Everyone loves watching movies. Whether scary, funny, tragic, or animated, movies always manage to perk up any person’s day. And because there is a great demand for home movie entertainment, the market is recipient to a surge of various video player brands.
However, like anything else in the market, some brands become more popular than others. Apex DVD players has caused quite a stir. Controversies surround certain hidden features introduced in the Apex DVD players.
Visual Disc and Digital Video Corporation or VDDV in China is responsible for developing the Apex DVD players, particularly the Apex AD-600A. These DVD players are sold in the U.S. market through Apex Digital Inc. A single Apex DVD player, model AD-600A, is said to cost only about $169.95. But the controversies go beyond its tag price. The Apex DVD players have been attracting attention because these are capable of playing DVDs manufactured in the other parts of the world. Since each region is assigned a specific number, DVD players are supposed to play only those which are made from their region. Apex DVD players have this feature which can override regional encoding and copyright protection scheme. Otherwise known as Macrovision, the copyright protection works to prevent the illegal or unauthorized copying of DVDs.
Because these features are highly controversial, these have caught the attention of the Motion Picture Association of America, or MPAA. In fact, reports stated that the organization was contemplating on filing legal action against Apex.
Further, Apex is the first one to introduce the MP3 music format into the DVD player in the U.S. Thus, users can enjoy playing songs just by inserting an MP3-filled CD in the DVD player. The TV serves to display the menu, allowing users to playback songs.
If MP3.com was sued over the service which involved the conversion of CDs into MP3s, the Recording Industry Association of America, or RIAA, has not issued any statements on the features of the Apex DVD players.
The ability of Apex DVD players to override regional encoding, and copy movies have piqued the buying public’ interest as well. Now, Apex DVD players are finding their way into a lot of homes in the U.S.
Makers of Apex DVD players however, said that, the feature allowing the overriding of regional encoding and copyright protection were not really designed for use by the end users, but were mainly intended for use by developers. They alleged that consumers were not supposedly allowed to access those features. Further, there are more than 20 other manufacturers whose products have the same chips as Apex’s, making them possess the same features as the Apex DVD players.
But despite all controversies and legal arguments, consumers are taking everything positively. Majority of them are happy with their Apex players and have nothing to complain. However, officials of Apex said that the next models of Apex DVD player will no longer have the features.
Apex is yet planning on releasing several new versions of DVD players, including one for the car. The Apex car player is said to have the same capabilities as the Apex AD-600A. Referred to as the MD-100, this car player is designed to fit in the car radio space, and features CD, MP3, and DVD playback, as well as standard playback for AM/FM.
Indeed, Apex DVD players got its share of the market not just because they’re a bargain, but because they have features unlike any other. So for those who like to get the most out of their home video entertainment, make sure you have checked out all options. Sometimes, cheap means a good buy.
